Elementary Art

The Elementary Art room is a happy place full of color, materials and opportunity! Our youngest students learn about lines, shapes and colors, reinforcing what they learn in the regular classroom as they learn to use scissors and paint as well as work cooperatively. Older students study a topic such as ancient cave paintings or an artist such as Joan Miró and then create their own artwork inspired by their studies.

Students rotate through Art, Music and Drama, spending a trimester in each. The trimester ends with a Creative Showcase at which the Art students show family members what they learned through the term.

Middle School Art

Middle School students take increasingly sophisticated semester-long art classes. The Core Curriculum goal is to instill in students the joy of self-expression and esthetic awareness, a personal connection with their community heritage and varied cultures, and the achievement of skills. Sixth Graders study the elements of shape and basics of color theory while 8th Graders focus on creating two- and three-dimensional ceramic pieces that are fired in the school's kiln. Artwork is showcased at the Band and Choir Concerts at the end of each semester.

High School Art

High School students may choose from a variety of electives including Studio Art I, II and III; AP Art; Advanced Art (Fine Art or Design); Ceramics; and Photography & Photoshop. During Exploration Week students may take an Urban Art (graffiti) or Land Art seminar. Our students are extremely talented and many have gone on to study art at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), CalArts, LIM College, Parsons the New School for Design, MICA, the Pratt Institute and others.
