Visual Arts

Elementary School

The Elementary Art room is a happy place full of color, materials and opportunity! Our youngest students learn about lines, shapes and colors, reinforcing what they learn in the regular classroom as they learn to use scissors and paint as well as work cooperatively. Upper elementary students study art concepts such as abstraction, balance, line, form, pattern shape, color, space and texture through activities using clay, paint, wood, cloth, and metal.

At the end of each trimester, the department sponsors a showcase where the students display, present, and demonstrate what they have learned that trimester.

Middle School

Middle School students take increasingly sophisticated semester-long art classes. The Core Curriculum goal is to instill in students the joy of self-expression and aesthetic awareness, a personal connection with their community heritage and varied cultures, and the achievement of skills. Sixth-graders study the elements of shape and basics of color theory, 7th-graders deepen their knowledge with a full-year elective course, while 8th-graders choose from Ceramics, Drawing I, and Culinary Arts. Artwork is showcased at the Band and Choir Concerts at the end of each semester.

Upper School

Upper School students may choose from a variety of electives including Studio Art I, II and III; AP Art; Mixed Media; Printmaking; Ceramics; and Photography & Photoshop. During Exploration Week students may take an Urban Art (graffiti) or Land Art seminar. Our students are extremely talented and many have gone on to study art at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), CalArts, LIM College, Parsons the New School for Design, MICA, the Pratt Institute and others.
