After School Sports Clinics

The TASIS Dorado Athletics department strives to offer alternatives to develop our youngsters. Our main focus is to develop their capacity in three different areas: cognitive, affective and motor. Sports that are considered “nontraditional” in Puerto Rico are offered for the students who prefer other alternatives.

Active Bears (PK and Kinder)
Early childhood is the ideal time for acquiring fundamental movement skills because it is during this unique period that children build the basic movement abilities that are the foundation for learning more complex movement skills later in life. Motor skills do not mature on their own (Pica 2008). Not even basic body management skills—body-part identification, spatial awareness, and abilities like stopping on signal—take care of themselves to the extent that we want for our children. Movement awareness activities help to develop the movement principles of space awareness, body awareness, and effort awareness and relationships. The students will respond to the task or problem by exploring and experimenting on the floor level, on low apparatus, or on large apparatus, with or without equipment.

Judo Team
More important than just developing a better athlete, sports should build a better person. Judo, in particular, develops discipline, manners, punctuality, strength, stamina, tenacity, toughness, and confidence – all character traits that are essential for success and that are respected by society. The society also respects a person who wins with humility and loses with grace. Judo teaches many of life’s lessons and develops strong character traits that will serve children through their difficult teen years and into adulthood. These virtues may go well beyond what is practiced in the dojo.

Fencing Team
Fencing is an excellent sport for improving lower body strength and speed, as well as hand-eye coordination. Fencing also develops agility and flexibility and is probably most similar to many of the martial arts in terms of the collection of skills it requires. In fact, studying fencing has many benefits for both the body and the mind.

Physical benefits of fencing:
• Coordination
• Agility
• Balance
• Flexibility
• Strength Cardiovascular
• Endurance

Mental benefits of fencing:
• Focus Hand-eye coordination
• Problem-solving

Table Tennis
Table tennis is a sport that can be enjoyed by individuals of any age and physical ability. Top table tennis players are some of the greatest athletes in the world. Playing table tennis is a great way to stimulate the brain and promote quick thinking while improving hand-eye coordination. Table tennis is a low-injury risk sport that keeps one fit and flexible, without putting severe stress on joints. Playing table tennis increases one's agility and flexibility, and most of all reaction time.

Basketball Clinics
While your child practices ball-handling, dribbling, and shooting, they will also learn about good sportsmanship, teamwork, and the value of fair play. Our instructors take an individual interest in each child regardless of his or her ability on the court. Games will be played during as part of the class to reinforce lessons taught. Participants will be divided into age-appropriate groups

Volleyball Clinics
All-skills volleyball clinics will excite students about the fun competition of volleyball and the importance of team play. Players develop fundamental skills including serving, passing, setting, and hitting. Skills-based drills, as well as 3 vs. 3 and 6 vs. 6 wave competition drills, will be used daily.
